LOUISE HAY

About Our Instructor

At the height of the Jane Fonda craze, BLISS founder Mary Scott Vaughn began working in an Atlanta exercise studio. She was 15 and worked after school and weekends answering phones, signing up members and cleaning the studio before closing. She was also able to take classes for free which included warm up, high impact aerobics, floor work like sit-ups and leg lifts, and cool down - and she took a LOT of classes.  Eventually, she was certified as an instructor.

In 1981, Mary Scott went to Wake Forest University where there were no formalized exercise classes. Knowing that she needed an incentive to workout, she signed up with WFU administration to teach classes and did so 6 days a week. Her students were all college kids, both men and women. After graduating, Mary Scott attended local classes wherever she lived until she began traveling for a living.

Over the years, Mary Scott has had many medical issues, weight fluctuations, two knee replacements, and many other structural and health issues, as well as inherited arthritis. Exercising became difficult.

Fast forward to the year 2020. At the beginning of COVID-19 in early March, Mary Scott saw one of the early COVID commercials featuring an insurance company where the instructor was teaching her neighbors outdoors and using a bullhorn. At that moment the idea was born to suggest an outdoor exercise class for her neighbors who were all, like her, isolating and feeling the stress of the early epidemic.

What began then became this wonderful exercise program called BLISS Fitness: balance, low-impact, stretching and strength. Mary Scott has been teaching 4-6 days a week, rain or shine, for over two years. BLISS has evolved into a wonderful, soul-filling program where everyone participates at their own pace and does what they're comfortable doing, all within the structure of safety and good form.

Mary Scott has structured BLISS Fitness with the tenets of acceptance and inclusion. All are welcome, no matter what age, race, sex or medical ability/disability. There's something for everyone, and every part of the body is addressed - all the "regular stuff" plus the brain, hands, balance and more.
